Super Paper Mario

Thoughts

While this game was the start of a not-so-great change in direction for the Paper Mario Series, it has its own merits for sure:

  • Being able switch perspectives between 2D and 3D was and still is pretty novel
    • Having secrets and puzzle utilizing the perspective-shifting was clever, as was using the Wii remote like a flashlight to find things
  • Solid music
  • Interesting character designs

I think one of the only things I don’t like about it is how slow some of the navigation is around the home hub area, such as taking the elevators around — they take forever!

Main Story: Complete

2026 - September 14 - Monday:
I was playing this a bit last week, but I ended up tabling it in favor of playing through Super Mario Odyssey again. I hadn’t messed with it too much on the Switch 2, so it’s fun to play it again, especially with the graphics improvements with the beefier hardware. I’ll come back to Super Paper Mario again before long, though. When I set it down this time, I had just found the next Pure Heart in Flipside after Chapter 2.

2026 - August 25 - Tuesday:
As of 2026 - August 22 - Saturday, I finally ordered a new copy of this game for the Wii! I’m looking forward to playing it again on original hardware!
