The Shining

The Shining deviates from the source material of the book (The Shining) quite a bit, but is great in part as an adaptation, but especially as a an interpretation on its own. The tense atmosphere is really intriguing throughout the film. I especially like the first half of the movie — everything is so tense even when nothing particularly crazy is happening on-screen.
